The New Logic of M&A
by
Joseph Paul
of
AllianceBernstein
,
5/12/14
There seems to be a new calculus at work in the recent rash of takeovers, as investors set aside their usual wariness of deals and dealmakers for the promise of growth these combinations may bring. We think its a good reason to stick with stocks.
New Dawn for Peripheral Europe?
by
Darren Williams, Dennis Shen
of
AllianceBernstein
,
5/9/14
When Mario Draghi pledged to do whatever it takes to save the euro in July 2012, nobody expected things to change so quickly. Peripheral bond markets have since turned around sharply, supporting the European economic recovery. But can the improvements be sustained after countries exit their bailouts?
Asian Currencies to Stay Calm at Center of EM Storm
by
Hayden Briscoe
of
AllianceBernstein
,
5/5/14
Emerging markets have fallen from favor, but does that mean investors should avoid them entirely? We don?t think so.
Cast a Wider Net for Asian Income Stocks
by
Stuart Rae, Katsuhiko Mano
of
AllianceBernstein
,
4/21/14
Equity income has been a hot theme for Asian investors. But safer sectors that typically provide higher dividend yields are expensive. By casting a wider net, we think attractively priced income stocks can still be found in unexpected parts of the markets.
Real Estate Alpha Hides in Smaller Neighborhoods
by
Eric Franco
of
AllianceBernstein
,
3/27/14
After a spectacular five-year run, global real estate stocks look headed for a period of more normal returns. We think winning in this space will require a more discriminating eye?and venturing into the often neglected nooks and crannies of the smaller-cap real estate world.
Five Things You Should Know About Housing Reform Legislation
by
Michael Canter, Matthew Bass
of
AllianceBernstein
,
3/25/14
A recent US Senate bill calls for a restructuring of the government?s role in housing finance, including winding down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Here are five takeaways from the current proposal.
Retire with Power?Purchasing Power
by
Richard Davies
of
AllianceBernstein
,
3/19/14
Retirement planning isn?t just long-term investing, it?s long-term spending, too. How can retirees help insulate the nest eggs they?ve accumulated from the corrosive long-term effects of inflation?
Thirsty for Income? Try Dividend Growth
by
Frank Caruso
of
AllianceBernstein
,
3/11/14
Chasing yield has become a challenging mission for investors in recent years. As yields collapsed in fixed income, investors flocked to bond-like substitutes such as high dividend-yielding stocks. Now that these stocks have become a bit pricey, we think companies with strong dividend-growth potential offer a better way to source equity income.
Six Easy Pieces: Fundamentals of Asset Allocation Explained
by
Patrick Rudden
of
AllianceBernstein
,
3/3/14
Figuring out the best split for your assets often seems daunting. But it doesn?t have to be. This template can help you get started.
Wallflower Value Stocks Are Ready to Dance
by
Chris Marx
of
AllianceBernstein
,
2/24/14
Global equities are notching new highs, valuations are elevated and talk of market bubbles is increasingly common. Yet, by our measure, the potential for outperformance in value stocks has rarely been better. How can that be?
Investing in an M&A Boom
by
James Tierney, Jr.
of
AllianceBernstein
,
2/21/14
Equity markets got off to a rough start in 2014, but a resurgence of corporate dealmaking has given investors reason to cheer. With executives? confidence increasing, and companies sitting on a mountain of cash, we think that the stage has been set for a sustained recovery of US takeover activity.
Equity Markets: How Much Energy Does the Bull Have Left?
by
Kurt Feuerman
of
AllianceBernstein
,
2/18/14
After another big year for stocks in 2013, many investors are questioning how much longer the bull market can run before it collapses from exhaustion. This doubt has intensified with the early 2014 selloff. However, based on what we see, its not time to worry about the markets stamina yet.
Equity Markets: How Much Energy Does the Bull Have Left?

2/13/14
After another big year for stocks in 2013, many investors are questioning how much longer the bull market can run before it collapses from exhaustion. This doubt has intensified with the early 2014 selloff. However, based on what we see, its not time to worry about the markets stamina yet.
High Yield: The Perfect Storm That Wasn't
by
Gershon Distenfeld
of
AllianceBernstein
,
1/31/14
Investors should not focus on how rising rates may affect high yield. Instead, they should take a more thoughtful approach. This means they should not expect double-digit returns, nor should they reach for yield by buying triple-C bonds. At this point in the credit cycle, when concerns begin to develop disproportionally in lower-rated credits, investors are not getting compensated for taking this type of risk. Instead, investors should accept that single-digit returns are a realistic expectation in 2014. And in a relatively low-rate environment, we dont think thats a bad thing.
The Path to Becoming an Emerging Market
by
Henry D'Auria, Morgan Harting
of
AllianceBernstein
,
1/30/14
Why have some equity markets in the developing world flourished more than others? Its a pivotal question for investors hoping to stake an early claim to the potential emerging-market (EM) success stories of the next decade.
EM Sovereign Debt 2014: Neither Phoenix nor Failure
by
Paul DeNoon
of
AllianceBernstein
,
1/16/14
Emerging-market (EM) sovereign bonds were burned badly in 2013. Will they rise from the ashes in 2014? We believe some will and some wont. The watchword for 2014 will be selectivity.
Yellen's Inheritance: Monetary Policy in Flux
by
Joseph Carson, Darren Williams
of
AllianceBernstein
,
1/10/14
Evolving economic challenges are transforming central banking around the world. The new monetary-policy doctrine is likely to put greater emphasis on asset-price developments. But, without a true monetary anchor, central banks could still risk a repeat of the recent boom/bust cycle.
Value Stocks Beckon in Emerging Markets
by
Henry D'uria, Morgan Harting
of
AllianceBernstein
,
1/6/14
Years of playing defense have left many emerging-market (EM) equity portfolios laden with pricey safe-haven stocks. We think they risk missing the big opportunity thats brewing in value stocks, especially as EM economies begin to stabilize.

by
Dianne Lob
of
AllianceBernstein
,
12/23/13
The Federal Open Market Committees statement that it will begin to taper its bond purchases in January is a good sign that the US economy continues to heal, in our view.
Lessons Learned in 2013
by
Seth Masters
of
AllianceBernstein
,
12/15/13
In 2013, interest rates rose, bonds fell, equities soared, and US income-tax rates climbed higher. Before starting to place bets for 2014, investors would be wise to think about some important lessons from 2013.

by
Daniel Loewy
of
AllianceBernstein
,
12/5/13
Were seeing more US defined contribution (DC) plan sponsors looking at a variety of ways to help their participants manage volatility-and the accompanying anxiety and doubts that can often push participants to abandon their long-term investing goals.
Supersize EM: Obesity Matters for Emerging-Market Investors
by
Sammy Suzuki
of
AllianceBernstein
,
12/3/13
Modern lifestyles are closely linked to rising obesity. As emerging markets follow the lead of the US, expanding waistlines could provide a guide to consumption-related investment trends in emerging markets.
The Market Hits All-Time High. So What?
by
Dianne Lob, Ding Liu
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/27/13
With the US stock market repeatedly reaching all-time highs in recent weeks, many investors are becoming leery of investing in stocks. Focusing on the markets level is a mistake, in our view. Its market valuation, not level, that matters.
Dig Deep - Then Dig Some More - to Uncover Risks in EM Corporate Debt
by
Shamaila Khan
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/26/13
Emerging-market (EM) corporate debt returned big numbers for investors in recent years, as the sector rode a general wave of optimism about the future. But those days are gone. In 2013, successful investors have had to take a more painstaking path.
The Market Hits All-Time High. So What?
by
Dianne Lob and Ding Liu
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/22/13
With the US stock market repeatedly reaching all-time highs in recent weeks, many investors are becoming leery of investing in stocks. Focusing on the markets level is a mistake, in our view. Its market valuation, not level, that matters.
Are Bank-Loan Investors Getting What They Bargained For?
by
Ashish Shah, Ivan Rudolph-Shabinsky
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/21/13
Investors who chose high-yield bank loans over high-yield bonds earlier this year, expecting to be insulated against rising rates, might be surprised to find that bonds might have worked out better.
Doing Well by Doing Good
by
Tara Thompson Popernik, Paul Robertson
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/18/13
Charitable giving remains one of the few ways that US taxpayers can avoid taxes outright. If youre philanthropically inclined, giving can be a win-win that benefits you and society at the same time.
Passive Management ? Passive Investing
by
Ashwin Alankar, Michael DePalma, Guoan Du
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/15/13
Passive investments are often misunderstood. Instead of providing static positioning as implied by the label, they can be very capricious because of market and sector turbulence. To tame a passive asset, we think investors need to exert more active control over the dynamics of volatility.
Taming the New Medicare Surtax
by
Daniel Notto
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/14/13
The wealthy will likely see higher 2013 income taxes. One of the newest additions to the tax bill is the 3.8% Medicare surtax. By planning ahead, you may be able to reduce the tax biteor possibly avoid being bitten altogether.
China at a Crossroads
by
Anthony Chan
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/8/13
Expectations are high that President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang, nearly one year into their likely 10-year reign, will unveil reform policies that will define Chinas social and economic development over the next decade and beyond. After the proposals are made public, the new leaders must prove that they can implement substantial change without derailing the growth of the worlds second-largest economy.
Risk Management: An Ounce of Prevention
by
Seth Masters, Daniel Loewy, Martin Atkin
of
AllianceBernstein
,
11/1/13
They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. But if the sickness is excessive portfolio volatility, prevention can entail more than one step.
Getting Back into Value Equities
by
Kevin Simms
of
AllianceBernstein
,
10/30/13
It finally feels like a great time to be a value investor again. After several challenging years, market conditions have become much more conducive to finding undervalued, controversial stocks with long-term payoff potential. Even after this years equity-market rally, we think the value rebound is just beginning.
Putting Tax-Deferred Accounts to Best Use
by
Kathleen Fisher, Tara Thompson Popernik
of
AllianceBernstein
,
10/24/13
The common wisdom about retirement planning is to fund tax-deferred vehicles such as 401(k) plans and IRAs to the maxand we agree. But how to put these accounts to best use is more complicated.
Investing in Retirement: Bonds Aren't Enough
by
Kathleen Fisher, Tara Thompson Popernik
of
AllianceBernstein
,
10/17/13
What should you invest in after the spigot of earned income is turned off? Its a vexing question, especially since we expect lower stock and bond returns going forward.
What Uncle Sam Taketh Away, You Can Give Back (and Get a Tax Deduction)
by
Kathleen Fisher, Tara Thompson Popernik
of
AllianceBernstein
,
10/14/13
The government shutdown, now in its second week, has temporarily stopped the flow of government funding for many worthy organizations and may strain the resources of others. Federal grant administration is being delayed. For example, the grant administration staff at the National Institutes of Health has been furloughed; that may stop or slow grants for medical research.
Better Beta Is No Monkey Business
by
Patrick Rudden
of
AllianceBernstein
,
10/10/13
The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. This makes perfect sense to me, but says more about infinity than it does about monkeys.
Illinois and California: Similar Challenges, Different Approaches
by
Joseph Rosenblum, Neene Jenkins, John Ceffalio
of
AllianceBernstein
,
9/27/13
Every state faces challenges when it comes to balancing the books, but not every state is equally effective at tackling them. The responses of California and Illinois to post-2008 difficulties show how different the approaches can beand how much is at stake.
Companies Can Do More to Unlock Shareholder Value
by
Kurt Feuerman
of
AllianceBernstein
,
9/20/13
As the global recession and financial crisis move further back in the rearview mirror, companies have been more proactive about using their balance sheets in ways that enhance shareholder value. But we think they can do a lot more.
Expect Business as Usual After the German Election
by
Darren Williams
of
AllianceBernstein
,
9/19/13
Many pundits believe the German federal election on September 22 will prove a turning point in the sovereign debt-crisis. We are less convinced. Barring a massive shock, Angela Merkel is set to be endorsed as Chancellor for another four years. If this is the case, Germany is unlikely to depart much from the playbook that has served it well in recent years and which may now be delivering positive results.
Time to Bench the Equity Benchmark Too?
by
Patrick Rudden
of
AllianceBernstein
,
9/16/13
While fixed-income investors are growing increasingly aware of the risks of benchmark-oriented bond portfolios in a period of rising rates, equity investors have recently also started to question the wisdom of cap-weighted indices. We would go even further and argue that the performance of a cap-weighted benchmark may be irrelevant for the long-term goals of many institutional investors.
The Party's Over. Why Own Commodities?
by
Jon Ruff, Seth Masters
of
AllianceBernstein
,
9/10/13
Commodity prices soared during the first decade of this century. But now the partys over: new sources of supply are coming on line just as demand from China is slowing, leading to expectations of price declines. So should investors shun commodity-related investments?
GSE Reform Lumbers Up to the Starting Gate
by
Michael Canter
of
AllianceBernstein
,
9/6/13
Momentum is finally building to do something with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The bipartisan Corker-Warner proposal, now making the rounds on Capitol Hill, aims to dissolve the GSEs and start fresh. Meanwhile, Fannie and Freddie are testing innovative mortgage-security structures that transfer the risk of borrower defaults to the private sector.
Is China Past Its Manufacturing Prime?
by
Sammy Suzuki
of
AllianceBernstein
,
9/5/13
China has been an incredible export engine of manufactured goods over the past decade and the central player of the BRICs era. But mounting competition from other countries is gradually pulling production away from China. How should investors proceed?
Beware the Dangerous Stretch for Yield
by
Ashish Shah
of
AllianceBernstein
,
8/30/13
The US Federal Reserve talked in early summer about tapering its quantitative easing plan and raising interest ratesin part to stop investors from chasing yield into the arms of riskier loans. In the high-yield market, however, the conversation had exactly the opposite effect.
Is Asian Turbulence a Win for China?
by
Anthony Chan
of
AllianceBernstein
,
8/23/13
While this weeks sell-off in Asian currency and bond markets does not, as yet, amount to a crisis in our view, it is obviously cause for concern. At this stage, we think two outcomes are likely: one is that central banks and supranational funding agencies will work together to avert a full-blown crisis; the other is that China will emerge with its power and prestige as a regional financial powerhouse considerably enhanced.
What's the Point of Investing in Dreams?
by
Vadim Zlotnikov
of
AllianceBernstein
,
8/19/13
Is innovation dead or are we on the cusp of new technological revolutions? Without resolving this epic debate, we believe that market conditions today are conducive to investing in companies with disruptive potential, but it takes a sober approach to find big dreams that can deliver big returns.
To Manage Rising Rates, Consider Benching Your Benchmark
by
Douglas Peebles, Michael Mon
of
AllianceBernstein
,
8/15/13
As we enter a period of rising rates, many bond investors are growing more aware of the risks of benchmark-oriented bond portfolios. It may be time to sit the benchmark down and consider more flexible, unconstrained approaches to fixed income.
How to Invest in Emerging Markets 3.0
by
Sammy Suzuki
of
AllianceBernstein
,
8/14/13
Its been 25 years since the emerging-market equities index was created, and much has changed. Today, we believe that emerging markets are on the cusp of a third phase that might compel investors to shift away from benchmarks and focus on absolute risk.
Rising Rates? Keep the TIPS, Leave the Duration
by
Greg Wilensky
of
AllianceBernstein
,
8/2/13
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) have been popular in recent years with investors worried about inflation, and returns have been strong. But TIPS have benefited from a long bull market for bonds and high interest-rate sensitivity. This could be a problem aheadunless investors do something about it.
Japan: Firing the Third Arrow
by
Guy Bruten
of
AllianceBernstein
,
7/29/13
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abes ability to implement his agenda is politically unfettered. But can he deliver, and will his policies work? We remain cautiously optimistic.
