Market Dislocation Creates Buying Opportunity in Nuclear ETFs

Recent weakness across nuclear energy ETFs represents a market dislocation in the industry. While public equities have pulled back year to date, strong regulatory tailwinds and massive private sector funding suggest that short-term price pressure has created a compelling entry point for long-term investors.

Key Takeaways

  • Nuclear energy ETFs are underperforming broader equities year to date. This is due to profit-taking following multi-year rallies and broader market volatility surrounding AI infrastructure themes.
  • Private market activity tells a starkly different story, with microreactor developers securing massive capital infusions from major institutional backers.
  • Steffan Szumowski, nuclear research analyst at VettaFi, noted that short-term equity pullbacks reflect temporary public market mispricing rather than deteriorating industry fundamentals.

Profit-Taking & AI Infrastructure Uncertainty Weigh on Nuclear ETFs

The discrepancy between positive headline momentum and lagging share prices comes down to two key factors: Previous massive gains and broader market sentiment around artificial intelligence (AI), Steffan Szumowski, nuclear research analyst at VettaFi, said during a recent webcast.

“One of the biggest factors is that they have had a significant run over the past couple of years,” Szumowski said, pointing out that many nuclear equities surged between 50% and 200% following the energy rally that began in mid-2024. Even as pivotal executive orders were signed over the summer of 2025, share prices saw significant gains. As a result, public markets are left ripe for pullbacks as investors lock in returns.

Furthermore, public investors continue to view nuclear power primarily as a direct play on AI infrastructure. This exposes nuclear equities to wider market volatility surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) models and data center spending, according to Szumowski.

Hype around open-weight models, circular financing questions, and tech infrastructure pullbacks has created uncertainty. Meanwhile, public nuclear names have experienced parallel pressure and rising interest rates have also been a headwind.

Private Sector Transactions Reveal Strong Underlying Capital Demand

While public markets wobble over short-term narrative shifts, private market transactions highlight robust institutional confidence in nuclear technology and microreactor development.

“What I like to point a lot of people towards though is some of the calmer parts of the industry where people aren’t necessarily influenced by what Mr. Market is offering them that morning,” said Szumowski, highlighting recent capital raises by private microreactor developers.

For instance, Valor Atomics recently completed an equity raise exceeding $1 billion to advance its gas-cooled reactor design. The deal is backed by prominent investors including the Sequoia Fund. Similarly, Antares Nuclear — the first developer in its peer group to achieve reactor criticality — raised nearly $500 million for its micro heat pipe reactor design. The company is competing to supply NASA with nuclear power systems for lunar applications.

Szumowski emphasized that public equities may only be momentarily mispriced due to misplaced investor fears. He further added that the broader structural narrative surrounding nuclear energy remains fundamentally intact. The current pullback in nuclear ETFs like the Range Nuclear Renaissance Index ETF (NUKZ ) offers investors a compelling opportunity to allocate to a structurally supported energy transition play at a discount.
