Nuclear Energy Fuel Chain Expansions Signal Macro Support for NUKZ

Recent developments across the nuclear energy fuel chain are creating a favorable backdrop for reactor deployment programs. This serves as a constructive update for Range Nuclear Renaissance Index ETF (NUKZ ) investors.

Key Takeaways

  • U.S. uranium concentrate production reached its highest levels since 2017, more than tripling 2024 production volumes.
  • Actinide (private) became the first startup to enrich natural uranium directly into HALEU, bypassing existing fuel chain barriers.
  • NANO Nuclear Energy (NNE) signed a strategic agreement with Tillman Digital Gateway (private) to assess deploying microreactors at digital infrastructure sites.

Upstream Fuel Supply Gains Momentum

The nuclear fuel supply chain is expanding rapidly to meet growing energy demand. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), U.S. uranium concentrate production last year reached the highest levels recorded since 2017. This reflected more than triple the volume produced in 2024.

Furthermore, the weighted-average price of U3O8 – also called yellowcake – increased to $58.46 per pound in 2025 from $52.71 per pound in 2024, according to the EIA.

Meanwhile, commercial enrichment technology reached a new milestone. Last month, Actinide became the first-ever startup to enrich natural uranium to High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU). This development addresses a critical supply bottleneck for next-generation reactors.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has said there is zero available HALEU due to bottlenecks in the nuclear fuel chain, specifically at the deconversion stage. In 2024, the DOE contracted six companies to develop deconversion capacity for HALEU. However, Actinide’s technology is able to skip the deconversion process entirely, providing solid HALEU directly.

Downstream Construction & Deployment Partnerships

More exciting industry developments are emerging in downstream infrastructure. X-Energy (XE)). NANO Nuclear recently executed a strategic agreement with Tillman Digital Gateway (private) to assess integrating its proprietary microreactors into digital infrastructure sites.

As the nuclear energy supply chain continues to mature, constituents in NUKZ stand to gain from enhanced fuel availability and streamlined commercial deployment pathways.
