Inflation came in hotter than the consensus expected
September CPI rose 0.6% month-on-month and 3.7% year-on-year, above the 3.6% consensus.1 Energy did much of the work, with gasoline prices up 9.1% over the month and accounting for roughly half the headline increase. Core CPI rose 0.3% on the month to 2.6% year-on-year.1 That is firm enough to keep the Fed concerned that inflation is not yet contained.
Demand has not cooled enough to help
Retail sales rose 0.8% in September against expectations near 0.3%, with August revised up to 1.3%.2 Gasoline station sales contributed, up 6.4% on the month. Strip gasoline out and sales rose only 0.2%, down from 1.0% in August.2 Nominal strength is partly consumers paying more for energy rather than consuming more.
What this means for a digital asset sleeve
Bitcoin and the broader market moved lower on the hawkish repricing. Higher expected rates lift real yields and the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset, and tighter financial conditions shrink the liquidity available to risk assets. Flows followed: global digital asset investment products have seen $434M of outflows so far this week.
Markets still do not expect a hike this month. Polymarket put the probability of no change at roughly 75% on 15 October, against around 25% for a 25bp increase.3 Futures have moved materially more hawkish since the print, and expectations for an increase before year-end have risen. The timing shifted, not the direction.
The near-term setup is difficult rather than fundamentally bearish. The market needs either clearer evidence that inflation is cooling or enough weakness in activity to remove the threat of further tightening. Until then, every stronger-than-expected release generates fresh rate volatility. For allocators, that argues for treating the coming weeks as a data-driven range rather than a trend, and for sizing digital asset exposure against a strategic allocation rather than against a single print.
