With AI-powered tools now widely available to everyone, it’s easier than ever to create marketing collateral without professional expertise or training. In a matter of minutes, financial advisors can generate anything from website copy and social media posts to images, landing pages, and flyers — even an entire website design.
Yes, there can be great value in finding a fast and efficient way to produce material. But with mass AI adoption across nearly every industry, a new challenge is emerging: When everyone has access to the same technology, everything starts to look and sound the same.
Once you stop standing out and creating genuine connections with prospects, you face a big marketing problem.
Your Differentiators Are Everything
Identifying and clearly communicating your unique value proposition (UVP) is one of the most challenging aspects of marketing for most advisors.
Gone are the days when calling yourself a “fiduciary” was enough to stand out. And “pre-retirees” is no longer considered a niche.
Prospects have access to an increasing number of financial professionals who are all making similar claims about comprehensive planning, personalized advice, and putting clients first. Standing out, showing up in front of your target audience, and giving them a reason to remember you are becoming increasingly important, and difficult.
Generic, AI-generated web design and content don’t help you accomplish these goals. In fact, a Nielsen study found that over 60% of surveyed respondents could accurately detect AI-generated content, with that recognition leading to negative sentiment.
There’s Great Power in Being Original and Authentic
This is a trust-based business. If a prospective client visits your website and struggles to see a difference between you and the other firms they’re considering, you’ve lost an important opportunity. You don’t instill trust by building a digital footprint that feels inauthentic to your brand or unoriginal compared to other advisors.
Think of it this way: Your prospects are considering with whom to share intimate details about their finances, families, and concerns. Before that happens, they need to gain some sense of who you are.
They want a connection before they pick up the phone or schedule a meeting. Your website, social posts, videos, and content must be able to lay that foundation. Otherwise, you risk losing a strong client before they’ve even spoken with you.
AI Doesn’t Help You Stand Out
When someone decides to search for an advisor, you’re likely one of several on their radar (even if you’re a referral). Prospects are visiting your website, reading reviews, searching for you on LinkedIn, and repeating the process with at least two or three other firms. They’re starting to make comparisons well before an intro call is ever scheduled.
What would that experience feel like for a prospect if each advisor used the same AI tools to create their marketing materials and website? Similar prompts can lead to similar headlines, imagery, layouts, language, and design choices. Additionally, AI has no inherent connection to your firm, your team, or your clients. It relies on the information you provide in the prompt, paired with what it can find online.
Those same principles also apply to copy. AI can produce a perfectly polished paragraph about helping clients “achieve their financial goals” or “navigate life’s transitions.” It sounds okay on the surface, until your prospects start seeing the same sentiments on every advisor’s website.
Access to AI isn’t unique to your firm, and it doesn’t produce unique content — even when prompted to do so.
How to Keep Your Digital Presence Distinctly Yours
You don’t need to swear off AI completely to stand out. In many cases, AI can be a great tool for getting past “blank page syndrome,” outlining your initial thoughts to share with a professional designer or marketer, or streamlining repetitive administrative tasks.
However, you never want to copy and paste the output directly onto your website and consider the work finished.
Before publishing AI-assisted copy or design, ask yourself a few questions:
- What did we add to this that could only come from our firm?
- Does this look and sound like us?
- Would our existing clients recognize our brand or voice if they read this?
- Does it reflect the people we actually serve?
- Are the photos and visuals believable and accurate?
- If I swapped our logo with another advisor’s without changing anything else, would it fit their firm as well?
- Does the design support the visitor’s journey, or does it simply look impressive?
- Is there anything memorable or specific for prospects to take away?
AI-generated copy and design tend to be superfluous. Look for opportunities to cut the fluff and add your own perspective and experiences where possible.
A website design needs to function properly and effectively lead visitors toward the actions you want them to take. Some tips for using your website to stand out:
- Write the content as if you are speaking to a client. Use conversational vocabulary that matches your true style, not overly professional, jargon-heavy descriptions.
- Incorporate personal imagery and videos as much as possible. A welcome video, photos of you and your team in the office, and team headshots that match your style can go a long way in establishing a connection before the first call.
- Share your experience through success stories and testimonials (as allowed by compliance). This gives people an opportunity to understand what it’s like to work with you via real examples, not just boastful content.
- Explore design elements that showcase your personality. Whether you’re warm and welcoming, sophisticated, or casual, the colors, fonts, images, and graphics on your website can help support your identity. Templated, generic websites get lost in the crowd.
Your Humanity Is Your Advantage
Even when people struggle to explain exactly why something feels AI-generated, they still sense an impersonal or artificial feeling. Prospects don’t want to be tricked or misled, which is exactly what can happen when you rely too heavily on AI-generated content.
Originality is becoming increasingly valuable. Fortunately, advisors already have plenty of material that AI can never manufacture on its own: experience, client success stories, education, personality, perspective, and the “why” behind the work you do. Those are the things that make your firm yours.
AI can help you organize ideas and work more efficiently, but your marketing still needs to give prospective clients a sense of the real people behind the brand.
