View Membership BenefitsAdvisor Perspectives, a leading publisher and ranked as the #1 eNewsletter for financial advisors by the Erdos & Morgan “FAMOUS” Study (2019-2022) has announced its Venerated Voices™ awards for commentaries published in 2022. Rankings were issued in three categories:
- Top 10 Venerated Voices™ by Commentary
- Top 25 Venerated Voices™ by Firm
- Top 25 Venerated Voices™ by Author
The top 25 categories require a minimum of four posts annually.
The most popular topics in 2022 among all commentaries were related to the chances of an impending recession, asset bubbles, and where to invest should a recession hit.
Leading the Top 25 Venerated Voices™ by Firm category was Hussman Funds of Ohio, followed by Oaktree Capital Management of Los Angeles. In third place was Sitka Pacific Capital Management of Seattle.
Among individual commentators, the most-widely read was John Hussman of Hussman Funds. In second place was Howard Marks of Oaktree Capital Management followed by John Mauldin of Mauldin Economics in third place.
The most-widely read commentary of 2022, published on February 10th, was Gold May Rise but Silver May Double in 2022 by Keith Weiner of Monetary Metals. Weiner introduced the model built by Monetary Metals that provides a “clear signal,” stating that it has a track record of 75% accuracy in predicting future price moves in gold and silver. He listed various reasons for a potential gold-price spike including “zombie” corporations, the Fed not able to raise interest rates in the current environment, trade wars, green energy restrictions, and lockdown whiplash. Weiner explained:
It would be “insane” to hike interest rates in this environment, higher interest rates cause higher prices by increasing the cost of production. If the Fed tries it will not be able to push rates up very far, nor hold them there for very long. If the Fed reacts to this crisis, to tamp down any credit stress among zombies and everywhere else and gets even meme stocks to go back to their old ways of rising against all reason, then the silver price could jump much more than gold’s, possibly 60% more. The silver fundamental price is now lower than last August. Compared to gold, silver is behaving more like the riskier asset.
Estimating Downside Market Risk took second place, written by John Hussman at Hussman Funds and published on October 21st. Hussman offered his insight into how market conditions rely not just on prices but on valuation measures. He wrote that valuations are far from levels we associate with satisfactory long-term returns and expected further periods of speculative price levels. His recommendation in response to market losses: Respond to observable market conditions and shift as they do.
In third place was Entering the Superbubble’s Final Act, by Jeremy Grantham of GMO, published on September 1st. Grantham detailed the patterns of the three previous superbubbles and indicated that the current superbubble is following the exact same script. He warned that major long-term issues such as climate change, demographics, resource and food supply have shifted to short-term issues that affect GDP, inflation, and growth. Furthermore, the combination of overvalued asset classes, like housing, stocks, and bonds, paired with an energy demand surge and Fed hawkishness will cause the bubble to burst.
Advisor Perspectives’ website attracts more than 151,000 unique visitors per month, virtually all of them financial advisors serving high- and ultra-high net worth individuals. The company, which is part of VettaFi, publishes economic and market commentaries submitted by fund companies, advisors and independent research firms. In 2022, over 1,600 such commentaries were published and made available through a daily newsletter, Research Perspectives, which the company emails to its subscribers.
Venerated Voices™ rankings were determined by the number of unique readers of each commentary, using data provided electronically by the third-party web analytics service Google Analytics. The data were normalized using the average score per month or quarter (in the case of annual rankings). For the annual awards for the firm and author, a minimum of four commentaries must have been submitted during the year. Any participant is eligible to receive a quarterly award. Each firm and author is assigned a relative score based on unique pageviews, with a score of 100 equal to average quarterly readership.
Advisor Perspectives was founded in 2007 and is based in Lexington, Massachusetts. In October 2022, it was announced that Advisor Perspectives became a part of VettaFi. In addition to Research Perspectives, it publishes a widely read weekly newsletter, Advisor Perspectives, which contains original articles on the markets, the economy and practice management.
Advisor Perspectives will continue providing quarterly updates to its rankings, as well as issuing annual Venerated Voices™ awards.
